Haha it's a useless topic i'm sorry ...
But i thought this iMegaphone CD cover was really funny ...
Today it would be prohibited to sell this CD (at least in europe i don't know anywhere else) because you can't see people smoking on the artworks of music, movies, etc ...

Good grief, I didn't know she ever smoked! I hope she has given it up. It might explain why her voice was huskier in those days.

Added: there is an old locked thread on this subject. Search for 'smoking'.

BTW, while searching for iMegaphone period pictures I came across this interview:

a part in the article says,
One special tune she performed at a school assembly exposed an affair between her boyfriend and best friend for all her classmates. "Wicked, don't you think?" She smiles.

i remember her saying that she smoked when she was young in an interview with The Times, lemme find it...

right here was the quote

"She rebelled, 'I was everyones worst nightmare, drinking seeing boys, smoking...' she just wanted to play music"

when i read that i was caught by surprise, i like that picture though.

(i hope she doesnt smoke now, it will kill her breathing and her voice, and thats the last thing we want).

the interview even told us what teacher it was at school that found her irritating and sent her to the room full of keyboards! and that she got expelled from her school cuz she swore at the nurse!

dear Immi Very Happy

I think it is this one, from 2006:
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article670614.ece

I remember it fondly, because it was the first time I had heard of Immi, and I got Speak For Yourself soon afterwards.

ONE WOMAN BAND:

Imogen Heaps career as a singer-songwriter seemed doomed when her record complany dropped her. She decided to go it along - and their loss was her gain.
Three years ago, Imogen Heap turned up at NatWest. She was broke. Her pop duo, Frou Frou, had been dropped by their record label. SHe had debts totalling £10,000.
"The bank manager looked at my balance," the Essex-born singer explains. "He said, 'well you don't have a wage. How are we going to get this money back' And I'm showing him my press photos and playing him my CD. It was quite stressful."
Since, as we shall see, not making music isn't an option for Heap, she went back to Waterloo and remortgaged her flat. Then she ploughed the money into Speak For Yourself, a collection of glorious electronic art-pop which she wrote, sang, arranged, produced, played instruments on, designed the packaging for and released herself.
Imogen Heap is no longer broke. Last night she was a guest on The Tonight Show. Today, she will perform at Coachella, America's most critically regarded music festival, on a bill including Madonna and Depeche Mode. Now, she is sitting on her bed in the back of her tour bus, She is part lofty beauty - 6ft 2in, plus 6in of backcinbed hair - part giddy child. Her wardrobe tends towards the theatrical, and her room is littered with sundresses, scarves and red paper flowers.
Later, despite a billing opposite Kanya West, she packs them in. It's clear why: her performance is remarkable. Heap operates alone, flitting between 14 pieces of equipment to layer and loop her songs, while her twangy bazooka of a voice pulls all manner of gymnastics. undercutting this techno virtuosity is her stage-patter which, like her name, recalls nothing so much as a dotty Victorian aunt.
"Right. Good to see you. I'm going to start off with a difficult one. Hee! How are we all? I love Coachella. I'm really excited to be here. Hee! Anyway, I'm going to get started. This is my special acapella version of Just For Now (pause, rummage with wires), except it's not. Bugger. Ok..."
Imogen signed her first record deal 11 years ago, when she was 17. A solo album, iMegaphone (an anagram of her name) and another with Frou Frou were critically liked but soled modestly. Then she blamed her record company. Today, she's grateful.
"It's been a struggle, but where i am now, at the time my (new) album is out, with Myspace and iTunes...you could not have dont that five years ago."
With Arctic Monkeys and Gnarls Barkley, Heap is part of a new wave of musicians who have connected with fans by circumnavigating the usual music industry routes. Her song Hide And Seek - an acapella in which her voice is processed to spund like an android choir - never appeared as a single but, aster being raved over by DJs Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe, became a Top 10 Download on iTunes. In America, where Heap engineered Hide And Seek's appearance in the season finale of The OC, it leapt to bumber 32 in the Billboard equivalent. Her songs have appeared in CSI and Six Feet Under, on soundtracks to The Chronicles Of Narnia, Shrek 2 and Garden State, the last two garnering Grammy nominations (Garden State won), creating an awareness of her music outside radio abd propelling her US album sales past the 100,000 mark. Consequently, she is one of 2006's biggest UK exports. On Myspace, Heap boasts 15 million profile users, making her one of the most poopular musicians on the site (little wonder we keep reading that record companies are panicking).
Coachella is not like other music festivals. Over a weekend, in April, 120,000 music fans descend on the manicured lawns of the Empire Polo Club, three hours east of Los Angeles, in the golf resort desert lowlands. Glastonbury it isn't. The say after Heap performs, she returns to Virgin Megastore tent to sign autographs. She arrives wearing a shawl, stilettos and a dangly earing, kisses boyfriend Richie - a tattooed rock drummer - goodbye and sets to work. Heap has been sheduled to appear for 30 minutes, but her queue shows no sign of thinning, despite roasting sunshine.
"You were so original," says one teenage fan "I'd never heard of you before".
When heap was frowing up she knew she wanted to be an astronaut or Stockhausten. Born to an art therapist mother and a father who exported stone, aged one she was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, a bone infection that nearly cost her her left leg. Consequently, by Heap's admission, she became "really quite spoilt".
"I used to go mental and scream and lock myself in the bathroom"
A whiz who could turn her hand to cello, clarinet, guitar and piano, music became her life. Family holidays were booked on the proviso that hotels had a piano. When one failed to materialise in Cornwall, heap stayed in church playing the harmonium.
Aged 12, her parents seperated and packed her off to boarding school in Saffron Walden. She rebelled.
"I was everyone's worst nightmare. Drinking, seeing boys, smoking..."
She just wanted to play music, but Mr Dodge, her music tutor, declared her "really irritating". The she swore at matron and got expelled. Except,
"They needed me to do the end of year concert."
So she stayed at her headmistress' house, missing school, playing piano.
"So you see," she grins "I won."
The day after Coachella, Heap is sitting on stage in a conference room at the Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood. SHe's here for an A&R convention, as part of a panel discussing 'music's supporting role in the visual media'. These days, gettign songs into movies, TV shows and video games is big business. David Attenborough's Planet Earth has given Icelandic band Sigur Ros their first hit in five albums and Canadian singer Daniel Powter cleaned up when his Bad Day soundtrack crushed hopefuls exiting American Idol.
Heap takes questions. How important has TV been?
"Massively. After Hide And Seek was on The OC, I stuck it on iTunes and made a shedload of money (without a record company, she could watch each purchase being made to her credit card. Thirty-thousand people downloaded the track in a fortnight)."
Heap got The OC gig via Sanne Hagelsten, who places songs with TV shows.
"It's better to be on The OC than the radio" says Hagelsten "TV music supervisors are the new A&R men".
Now Heap is known as someone who gives a good soundtrack. When Disney and Dido failed to see eye-to-eye on a Narnia song, they were advised that Heap could conjour up a replacement withing the seven-day deadline.
"The problem is Dido needs an entourage to finish a song." she says "Whereas I can just create something quickly myself."
"She has a unique sound thats so emotional," says actor/director Zach Braff, who used Heap's music in his films Garden State and the upcoming The Last Kiss. "It meshes perfectly with visual storytelling. Plus, I like her."
When she was 16, Heap headed for the BRIT school, the institution in London specialising in performing arts and technology. She was taken up by manager Mark Wood, who booked her first slot between Eric Clapton and The Who at 1996's Hyde Park Prince’s Trust Concert. Nik Kershaw, the Eighties pop pin-up, oversaw recording of 1998’s I, Megaphone. It seemed to serve notice that the next female singer/songwriter had arrived. Heap was compared to Joni Mitchell, Björk, PJ Harvey and Madonna. But her star failed to ascend. When the record company demanded hits, she bailed. In 2000 Heap formed Frou Frou with Guy Sigsworth, the songwriter who wrote Crazy with Seal. Again, the sales weren’t there. Worse, she was stung by perceptions that Sigsworth was the songwriter, while she was “just” the singer.
“It did wind me up. Because my identity is that I’m a musician. I started singing later.”
Following the remortgaging of her flat, Heap resolved to make an album that was all her own work. She bought the equipment and booked studio time to master the unwritten album one year later. Disillusioned by record labels, she opted to set up her own, Magaphonic, and released the album herself. (In March this year, she signed a deal with Sony on the condition she gets complete control.)
“Immi is the most instinctively musical human I’ve met,” says Sigsworth. “If I said, ‘We need a bassoon,’ she’d find one on eBay and be concert-standard by Tuesday. I knew America would get Immi more than the UK. In America, you don’t have to apologise for being best.”
It’s May, and Imogen Heap is back in her bus. She’s on day five of a three-week American tour, every show thus far having been upgraded to a larger-capacity venue. TV viewers will soon hear from her, in the finale of the next season of The OC, covering Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. Then there’s talk of writing a film soundtrack, for a not-quite-confirmed project: “Like March of the Penguins, but with flamingos.” This time, it won’t be a solo mission: Heap wants to invite her favourite musicians to contribute.
“I had to prove that I could do this all by myself,” she says. “And I have. It was good fun getting it out of my system.”

IH. “Hide and Seek.” I rarely tell anyone what it’s about. Other people’s interpretations are probably far more interesting, but it was a very cathartic song for me. I wrote it in a very short space of time and it was obviously just dying to get out of me. And I don’t want to let anyone know [the story behind it] because I don’t want the person it’s about to have the satisfaction of knowing it’s about them!

So what is it about? XD

I heard it was about her being subjected to drugs and violence or something around that subject.

I think the song is about Imogen's ex and their relationship. There does seem to be references to self-destructive behaviour. To me it reads like a voyage of self-discovery, to some of the more "dark" places or pleasures; and a commentary on that voyage. It also seems to imply a lack of acceptance of other people to his behaviour and/or their relationship. It also seems later in the song that she does not care what other people think, and she rebelling.

One thing that is quite interesting is that the the 'angry angel' mentioned in the song is represented as being both male and female! The angel is 'he' in the first verse and 'she' in the second verse'. I noticed that Imogen refers to gender of the "angel" differently in live versions of the song also, so it is obviously intentional.

I interpret that gender change to represent a change in perspective, and seems to be two different people, or points of view. Perhaps, it is Richie and/or his guardian angel (be it conscience, or a parental figure), and later this perspective is reversed.

I don't think it is entirely clear what the "angel" represents. I rather think it is more a reference to one's inner conscience, or sense of guilt, rather than an religious reference to an "angel", guardian or otherwise. Most probably intentional double entendre, or metaphor.

Here is a live version of Angry Angel:

^ Whoa, I've seen that video multiple times, and never noticed the drummer was Richie. Is that Richie? Maybe I'm just not too used to seeing him with partially bleached hair. Razz

I always thought the "angry angel" was her parent(s) or someone in a similar vein and she was resisting their disapproval of her relationship with some guy whom she was enjoying her time with, and she was justifying his behavior.

But then I've always sucked at interpretating...
